(Max. Marks: 20)                   Time: 60mins

I. Choose the correct answer.   5 × 1 = 5

1. Decimal value of 1/2

(a) 0.4 (b) 0.5

(c) 0.3 (d) 0.2

Ans. 0.5

2. (a + √b) (a-√b) =
(a) a ² – b ²
(b) a – b ²
(c) a² – b
(d) a – b

Ans.  a ² – b

3. Rationalising factor of √5
(a) √5
(b) √4
(c) 5√5
(d) 5
Ans. 5

4. a ⁰  = ……
(a) 0
(b) 1
(c) a
(d) -1

Ans. 1

5. ⁿ√a =
(a) a ¹/n
(b) a ⁿ
(c) a ⁻ ¹/n
(d) a
Ans. a ¹/n

II. Fill in the blanks 5 × 1 = 5

6. Express 15.4 in p / q form …….

Ans. 154/10 = 77/5

7. Rationalising factor of √2+√3 is …….
Ans. √2 – √3

8. (√a+√b) (√a-√b) ………..
Ans. a-b

9. (64 ) ¹/⁶ …..
Ans. 2
5. One Rational number between 3 and 4 ……

Ans. 3.5
Answer the following quesions 3×2 = 6

11. Represent 5/3 : and – 5/3 on the nuber line

12. Find the value of √2 upto 3 decimal places

13. Rationalise the denominator of 1/(4 + √5)

Solution . To rationalize the denominator, we multiply both the numerator and the denominator by the conjugate of the denominator. In this case, we multiply by 4 – √5:

1/(4 + √5) × (4 – √5)/(4 – √5)
(1 × (4 – √5))/(4 × (4 – √5) + √5 × (4 – √5))

(4 – √5)/(16 – 4√5 + 4√5 – 5)
(4 – √5)/(16 – 5)

(4 – √5)/11

So, the rationalized form of 1/(4 + √5) is (4 – √5)/11.

IV. Answer the following questions 1×4=4

14. (a) Visualise 2.874 on the number line using sucessive Magnification.

(OR)

(b) If a, b are Rational numbers. Find the values of a and b in the equation

√5 + √3 / 2 √5 – 3 √3 = a – b √15

Solution . To find the values of the rational numbers a and b in the equation:

(√5 + √3) / (2√5 – 3√3) = a – b√15

[ (√5 + √3) × (2√5 + 3√3) ] / [ (2√5 – 3√3) × (2√5 + 3√3) ]

[ (√5 × 2√5) + (√5 × 3√3) + (√3 × 2√5) + (√3 × 3√3) ] / [ (2√5 × 2√5) + (2√5 × 3√3) – (3√3 × 2√5) – (3√3 × 3√3) ]

[ 2√25 + 3√15 + 2√15 + 3√9 ] / [ 4×5 + 6√15 – 6√15 – 9×3 ]

[ 2√25 + 3√15 + 2√15 + 3√9 ] / [ 20 – 27 ]

[ 2× 5 + 3√15 + 2√15 + 3× 3 ] / [ -7 ]

[ 10 + 3√15 + 2√15 + 9 ] / [ -7 ]
[ 19 + 5√15 ] / [ -7 ]

Comparing this to the right-hand side of the equation, a – b√15, we can see that:

a = 19
b = 5

Therefore, the values of a and b in the equation (√5 + √3) / (2√5 – 3√3) = a – b√15 are a = 19 and b = 5.
